The Progressive Caucus Budget Alternative in Congress to Ryan-Obama Budget Proposals Dr. Jack Rasmus gives an update on deficit cutting in Congress and predicts no government shutdown on March 27 or May 18, as both wings of the single party system in America (aka Teapublicans and Timidcrats) move toward a final deal on spending cuts to reach $4 trillion target later this summer. Jack welcomes back guests Mike Prokasch of the New Priorities Network and Michael Eisenscher of US Labor Against War to discuss specifically the elements of the Progressive Caucus budget alternative being debated today in Congress. Dr. Rasmus provides a brief overview of Ryan (Teapublican) and Obama (Senate) budgets introduced last week and their proposals to cut social security, medicare, Medicaid, etc. while protecting defense spending and taxes on the rich. Mike and Michael explain how the Progressive Caucus budget proposals offer a dramatic and progressive alternative.

Dr. Jack Rasmus interviews 2012 Green Party presidential candidate, Jill Stein, as part of the show’s on-going discussion with alternative political parties. Jill explains what’s new with the Green party since last year’s elections: New gains by the party, new coalitions at the grass roots with Occupy and other parties, initiatives at the college and local level and new membership influx. Jack asks Ms. Stein, what’s different about the Green Party’s strategy and tactics compared to other third party initiatives.
Next week’s Alternative Visions show will focus on the new budget proposals of the House Republicans and the Obama administration, plans to cut social security and medicare while restoring defense cuts by both, and what alternatives are possible. For the latter, see Dr. Rasmus’s recent speech of Feb. 28 to the Progressive Democrats of America posted on the PRN website or on his website, www.kyklosproductions.com/videos.

Dr. Jack Rasmus welcomes guest, Professor David Gillespie, author of the recent book, ‘Why Third Parties Matter in American Two-Party Politics: Challenges to Duopoly”, to discuss the experience of third parties in American politics. Is it true that 3rd parties can’t make it in American politics, due to the ‘winner take all’ structure built into American politics and its bias toward only two parties? What does the American historical record really say about third parties?”
David Gillespie bio: “Over his long career in political science, Dr. J. David Gillespie has served on the faculties of several U.S. colleges and universities and as a Fulbright Professor in Estonia. In 1997 he was selected as the Carnegie-CASE Professor of the Year for South Carolina. Now semi-retired, he continues to teach at The Citadel and the College of Charleston. He is the author of many articles and papers on third political parties as well as two books on the topic: Politics at the Periphery: Third Parties in Two-Party America (1993) and Challengers to Duopoly: Why Third Parties Matter in American Two-Party Politics (2012).
